I'd rather do it myself (another step towards failure)

"If you're up against a problem, meet it squarely face to face........"

     One of the things I've noticed with many of my intensive in-home counseling clientele is the propensity of many parents, particularly single mothers, to allow their children, primarily sons, to avoid things that they are not particularly talented at. In many cases these parents will do household chores for the boys stating "If I let him do it, I'll have to do it all over again. He does a horrible job. Id rather do it myself."

     Interestingly enough these same parents will then complain that the child is irresponsible. To many times the old adage "Mothers love their sons, and raise their daughters." rings true. The suggestion that these parents compel these sons to complete the chore and to teach them how to meet a standard is often met with resistance. Teaching them to walk by extending your hands in front of the infant, and baby-talking with them to teach them to walk was adorable and fun, but teaching them to be responsible seems like pulling teeth.

     If you want your child to be responsible, you have to give him responsibility and guide him while he moves from under-performance to satisfactory performance, to enable him to become responsible. "I've told him a thousand times..." is normally expressed by these parents. Explaining, discussions, nagging, yelling, or subtle hints normally doesn't work. Meet the problem squarely face to face with action, not with words. The opposite option normally leads your son another step towards failure.

I believe in.......

For the national day of writing - I believe:

      I believe in improvement. This is far deeper than a belief. I've seen people drastically improve thier lives by improving one thing. A parent that I'm counseling recently shared wih me that her "bad child" hasn't had a violent temper tantrum in 10 consecutive days. His norm was two days. She had changed one thing in their relationship and brought about a level of change.
     When I first met with the parent I brought out some dominos and placed 10 of them in a row. I pushed the first one in a row and all of them fell. I stood all of the dominos up again and then removed one of the dominos from the row. This time when I pushed the first one a different experience occured..... The area where the domino was removed reduced the momentum and force of the falling dominos reduced and 3 were left standing. I looked at her and stated "Change one thing and you change the experience." I then re-stood the 9 fallen dominos and removed a second domino from the row. This domino that I removed was immediately in front of the open area from the first domino I removed. This time when I pushed the first domino only two dominos fell. The remainder remained standing. I looked at her and stated "We need to determine whicch two things can be improved or removed in your household."
    I know a man who converted to Islam over a decade ago and became a far better man. While family members are still rebuking his change, based on thier love for Christianity, they can't deny his change. I've counseled parents to change their child's teacher and the student's grades have raised. I belive in Improvement and seek it daily. Let's get improved.

Ashee,
SV

Sometimes you have to let it go. (FREEdom)

Sometimes you have to let go. I recently met with a custodial parent who deeply wanted a son to have better relationship with the other non-custodial parent but didn't have any reason to trust the non-custodial parent with the child's best interests. The other parent refused to talk unless the discussion was in the direction of gaining custody. To attempt to bully the custodial parent into providing custody the other parent repeatedly made loud, demeaning, profanity laden statements in front of the child towards the custodial parent. The child also joined the non-custodial parent in the tirade. As we talked the custodial parent couldn't get past the fact that the non-custodial parent and the child were both emotionally and verbally abusive. "What do I do now" asked the custodial parent. I replied "Let it go (speaking of the interactions which are always demeaning). You can stay in one place and wallow in the anger and depression or you can let go and keep it moving." 30 minutes later the custodial parent agreed by stating "If I want something different I have to do something different. I need to let it go, nothing will change if I stay dealing with them like this." This parent let go of an abusive interaction and subsequently refused to have interactions with the other parent. Sometimes you have to let it go.
Let go of your demeaning relationships.
Let do of your debt.
Let go of your inhibiting inhibitions.
Let go.
Enjoy the music.

Merry Coptic Christmas !! (Something is born anew that can change your world)

Today, January 6th, is Christmas Eve for the Coptic Church. (Salutes to my Ethiopians and all others who still observe the first and earlier calendar dates of the Christmas observance/Holy-Day/Holiday !!!)

A few days ago I went shopping and saw a young attractive cashier. As I walked up to the counter I noticed the Coptic Cross on her neck. To be sure I asked "Is that a Coptic Cross ?". She looked at me a little surprised, shook her head, and uttered "It's an Ethiopian Cross, it's from Ethiopia." as she placed my groceries into the grocery bag. "Right, it's a Coptic Cross. Won't you be celebrating Christmas on January 6th or 7th this year ?" I replied. "I'm sorry maybe I was mistaken, your features and your name on your name tag struck me as being Ethiopian." A smile was followed by a look of shock as she asked "How did you know ? How do you know these things ?" I laughed and stated "I've been around a lot of Ethiopians, besides our people should know about our people. - Merry Christmas in a few days." She smiled and expressed thanks as I walked out of the store.

As I walked out of the store it struck me, while the date was of Christmas was changed around 1583, the message of "something being born anew that can change your world" is a daily opportunity. Just as some people have ignorantly told our Ethiopian and Coptic family that they are "celebrating wrong" I think the realization that every day is a new born opportunity misses too many folk. Celebrate today as a new birth, and go out and do something that will change your world. Merry Coptic Christmas !

Move Forward. Take the STEP.

So she said "I'm not sure if I should apply. I don't like to fail." After a short period of silence I replied "I'm sure that has helped you avoid a lot of heart-ache. Has it helped you achieve ?" She smiled. "I see where you're going with this Mr. Varner" she stated. "No, it hasn't helped me achieve." I smiled and remained silent. "O.K. I'll complete the application.........I'll do it now." she stated. I smiled, nodded, and pointed to the computer station where the student slowly walked, sat down, and began her college application.

Back to you, the reader......What opportunities have you recently avoided to avoid heartache ?
Know this...... When you avoid heart-ache, you also avoid God's luck and oppurtunity.
Take the step. Move Forward. Take the STEP.

Tax Refunds and stupidity (Bling, Bling, Busted)

During a recent presentation a lady became indignant when I stated that "One get's a refund when something goes wrong." She couldn't understand what I considered wrong about a Tax refund. No amount of explanation would suffice. I realized that I may have just hit a nerve. Tax refund-time is the only time when 'folk' had extra money she exclaimed, "The rest of the year everybody is broke...... Maybe except you." she retorted. "Ain't nobody got time or money for that stuff you talkin' !" A later one on one discussion with her later revealed that she invested more money in her cable bill and cell phone bill than she invested in her retirement..... The following article provides some of the guidance I provided to her regarding what she might do with her tax-refund next year (she had already splurged her tax refund).

The full article is available here . Here are a few things the article advises:
Tax time is right around the corner, and anyone anticipating a refund has probably started thinking about how that refund will be spent. For some people, a tax return is seen as a good excuse to buy a luxury item or take a vacation. For people who are savvy with their personal finances, a tax refund check is a useful tool for getting ahead financially.

The average refund over the last several years has run about $3,000, which is a great way for a first-time investor to get started with saving, or for a seasoned investor to bolster their nest egg. It can also be used to pay off debts or smartly refinance other ones. Here are some ways to get the most out of your tax refund check.
1. Open a certificate of deposit investment.
2. Invest the money into your current 401-K.
3. Invest into or start a retirement account.
4. Add to your savings account.
5. Get rid of your debt.
6. Make payments "to the principal" of your mortgage.
7. Reduce the car payments.
8. Save the money for Christmas Spending to avoid going into Christmas Debt. Read my article on Christmas and the Anti-Christ.
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I personally think that the first thing you should do is create an emergency fund and/or a no-doubt fund. Only use the "Emergency Funds" for emergencies while the "No-Doubt" fund is for things we know are going to happen, like needing new tires, or having to buy new clothes for that growing child of yours. While I don't totally agree with the article, any of the ideas it presents are better than splurging when you are in debt. It's so much better, and the feeling lasts longer when you splurge after you are out of debt. If you have consumer debt, and you'd like to reduce the interest rate, and the amount owed, give me a text or a call @ 757-932-0177.
Hook yourself up first. Who's gonna loan you money to retire on ?
I recently met with DJ client who asked me a couple question about financial maters. I had attempted to work with his financial plan two years ago, and he kept putting me off. Now he's realizing that he wants to create something to help his child who could attend college in two years. So now he's ready to open a 529 account and asked me to just prepare the papers and he's ready to sign. I noted that I'm currently not involved in the financial services field while I'm completing my Masters, and then referred him to a few of the professionals I work with for my investments (Ron McLean, Joey Colisito, and John Epting). After that disclosure I asked "How much do you have in your retirement accounts ?" He noted that he's not worried about him, he wants his child to go to school. My response: "Hook yourself up first. It's easier to find college money than it is to find retirement money. Who's gonna loan you money to retire on ?"
My point: Invest in your future first. If you don't have anything growing to live on when you cannot work anymore, you will be dependent upon others. If you want your children to have a good future, invest in yourself so you will not be a burden upon them later. If you are not investing a mimimum of 10% of your income into your future, meet with a financial adviser soon.
Wave your hands in the air ! (Accommodations)
True story....
My background in Special Education has provided me with a working concept with the term accommodations. Students who receive Special Education services very often have instructional accommodations (changes in the way a teacher provides instruction) to make sure that each student has access to a similar level of instruction. Some students have accommodations of sitting in the front of the room, or additional time to submit work, or they wear glasses or a hearing aid. The teacher doesn't change the instruction, the students just gets something to give them equal access to the experience.
Very often when I do presentations, I guide the audience into understanding that they are responsible for identifying areas in their life where they have deficiencies, and find accommodations to assist them. Using auto-pay on my retirement investments is an example of an accommodation as I often forget to invest if I didn't use auto-pay. I also use two alarm clocks set at different times to make sure I awaken at time. Often in life we are presented with good information, yet we ignore the information because it may not seem to apply to us. If you want the results that the information provides, but don’t think that the information can apply to you, then this would be a good time to apply an accommodation.
A while ago I was leading a group of teens in a leadership training activity into considering the concepts of accommodations and the importance of one to identify one's deficiencies and find accommodations. I asked if any of them had problems with their 9 times tables and a few students shook their head affirming YES. I then showed a Youtube video that demonstrated how one can use their 10 fingers to do the 9 times tables easily. (Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oamy8L2lDZM). As I began doing the strategy in front of the group I then noticed that one of the teens only had one hand. To make things further embarsing, this was one of the teens who stated that they had a problem with the 9 times table. I quickly stated "If you want to be slick, you can do this with your feet so that no-one can see that you needed the accommodations." The student smiled, and shook their head in agreement. Later on my co-facilitator stated "I was embarrassed for you. I just wanted to begin laughing when I realized the student only had one hand. You handled that well. I just had a thought. If that teen could draw a hand on a sheet of paper, they could use that strategy. If they are creative, that strategy can still work for them.
Identify your problems, and search for accommodations. You can accomplish the same with less. You have the whole world in your HAND. Give yourself a HAND !
Be prosperous !
Christmas and the Anti-Christ
To celebrate Christmas, many believers did something the Bible teaches it's readers not to do...... Go into debt. Putting Christmas onto your credit card might be the Anti-Christ.
!!! Happy New Year !!!
    I decided to wait to make this post until after the Holy-Day& Holiday season.Just a few weeks ago many placed themselves into debt to celebrate Christmas and gift giving. Credit cards and the ease of borrowing has made it easy for 'Christians' to use credit in a manner which is fundamentally obverse to the teachings of the Bible..... I've decided to call 'debt' the 'Anti-Christ'. Plainly put, the Bible and other Holy books of guidance direct their followers to avoid debt. Putting Christmas onto your credit card could be construed as doing the exact opposite of the holy teachings. Putting Christmas onto your credit card might be the Anti-Christ.
Let that marinate for about 11 months........I'll join you in that consideration. Why not take a look at the below Michelle Singletary video or visit Dave Ramsey's site while marinating.
When I figured it out... Brother Omi (Guest Post)
Photo Omi & Seko circa' 1998
Here's a guest post from my brother from another Mother and Father - Omi ! Omi and I have been brothers since 1997, and I have always learned something each time we link-up. I credit Omi with my entre' into electronic media. Omi is a B-boy, scholar, and freelance writer. A New Yorker born and bred who now resides in the midwest.You can find more Dan at his blogs, most notably:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I get asked how my wife and I met, I always warn the person or people who ask that it's boring. It really is. It wasn't love at first sight which I don't believe in at all. It wasn't a “moment” where the entire room stopped as if we were in some kind of emotionally controlled time shift. There is nothing spectacular about it. I am also finding out that many of us embellish the “how we met” story to make it sound more dramatic. We make it fairy tale land. Then when the relationship doesn't work out, we don't even bring up that story anymore.

One story I love telling and I thought I blogged about but never did, is when I realized my wife was definitely a keeper. I want to warn folks by telling them that its not going to be the same for everyone else. So don't try to make the same thing happen. There is just simply different strokes for different folks. We all have our own tastes, preferences, bias, etc. So my story will not be yours and vice versa.
Just keep that in mind as you read along.

It was probably our 10th date. I think we had several dates and several times where we just hung out at my place or hers. I never counted hanging out at someone's house as a “date.” So my math could be wrong. My son was going to be in this wedding as a Bible bearer. Yes, they have those, too. I thought it would be a great time to introduce X to her. At that time, we weren't actually official either. I really dug her and loved her company. We spent hours talking. The sex was great as well. In the back of my mind, I did want to commit. At that time, she wanted us to ease into it. So I obliged her.

To be honest, I thought she would be weirded out if I asked out to a wedding. Especially one where my ex would be there. If there is a saboteur out there, it would be her. Back then I always threw an olive branch to her and she always burned it. Heck, she still does it's just that I stopped extending them joints to her. She thought it was a great idea. That's one thing I always loved about my wife, she was down for anything.

The wedding location was about a half a mile from my place and it began at 1:30pm. She asked if she could come by my place at around 11:30. I thought it would be great. She showed up right on time but I noticed she wasn't dressed for a wedding. I know what you are thinking. She wasn't dressed for a club either. She was more dressed to help me put up a shelf. She looked great but not wedding great. A red flag went up.

We talked as I ironed. It was a wonderful conversation. In the back of my mind, I thought to myself “I hope this heffer ain't thinking about going to the store to buy some clothes before the wedding. We definitely don't have time for that.” Yet she never mentioned anything and we kept talking. At around 12:45pm, I asked, “are you ready?”

I expected her to say “can we go to a department store so I can pick up some stuff?” If she did, I had a speech prepared.

“Can I borrow your iron?” She asked.

After I agreed, she pulled out some fabric from her bag. She cut the fabric into two pieces and ironed it. Then she pulled out a beautiful top and ironed that as well. When she was done, she made a skirt with a matching head wrap. I was enthralled. I never saw anything like that in my entire life. The entire transformation took about 15 minutes. I was breathless.

I thought to myself, “if you let her go you are an idiot...”

I remember heading to the church. Everyone stopped with their jaws opened. Some people even asked “are you a princess of some sort?” I wanted to say “yes!”

And that was the beginning...

Guest Post - Reflecting On Commitment by AngelinaD

Reflecting On ~ Commitment

I’m beginning to find it interesting that people have asked me to blog about specific topics; that my reflection and introspection is both relevant and personal to those who can receive it. I’ve shared this with you to say that I am thankful for this gift as it has been given to me; and every word I print or speak carries with it the Spirit of the Gift…and so for my Sunshine who requested it, I reflect on ~ Commitment…

com·mit·ment n. The state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to a course of action or to another person or persons.

I am committed to my faith. I am committed to the upbringing of my children. I am committed to supporting my mother. I am committed to using my gifts. I am committed to the man I love. Commitment is relational; so by my own declaration, if I am committed to my faith, then my commitment to all the other things goes without saying.

Faith is the complete trust or confidence in someone or something, and it is not based in proof. It is, quite simply, belief. Faith is the gut feeling.  Faith is the knowing. Faith is the – say what you want, but I believe that _______. It does not require justification or explanation, and people can have faith in whatever or whomever they so choose. Do you agree?

Stay with me now…

Commitment is the state of being bound emotionally or intellectually – emotion and thought. It is the response to the things you can see and touch and contemplate. Commitment is the responsibility to do and act based on – faith.

When you are committed to faith, you will act in a manner that is a constant demonstration of that commitment, that responsibility. You see, you are the representative of that which you declare and any shared commitment rests in shared faith and shared understanding of what that means to any persons involved.

Take a moment to consider your observations of the actions of others. Do their actions represent the faith commitment they declare? Why or why not? If your response is based solely on outcomes that affect you, you may have misinterpreted to what they were committed.

Also, consider your own actions in situations. Do your actions represent the faith commitment you declare? Why or why not? If you are acting in a way that solely suits you, then perhaps you may need to reevaluate your commitments as well.

“The time is always right to do what is right.”
~ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is my belief that commitment is responsibility. It can do good or harm, depending upon who declares it. It is the act of being responsible to and for situations, atmospheres, and at times, people.

Be committed to right; and anything or anyone who does not share your level commitment will show themselves – wrong.
